With a gorgeous and fitting backdrop of surf, sun and sand, a group of youth members began work on developing their skills to become our future lifeguards last night. They are all signed up on the Graduate Lifeguard Programme, which focuses on Beach lifeguard skills and techniques and will assist them in their journey to become a professional lifeguard. The course is run by Surf Life Saving GB and works in co-operation with the RNLI enabling the graduate to experience actual lifeguard duties first hand joining in with the professional lifeguard service, patrolling the beach. Over a three year period, the graduates will work towards completing modules that are featured in the SLSGB NVBLQ Beach or surf lifeguard award, developing and embedding key lifeguard knowledge and skills. The Portreath cohort will soon be delivering presentations within local schools and clubs to raise beach and sea awareness with the aim of educating people and decreasing the number of lives lost at sea. If anyone has a group that they would like to have a presentation on sea safety contact Channy.
