PORTREATH SURF LIFE SAVING CLUB CROWNED NATIONAL STILLWATER CHAMPIONS 2016
Last weekend over 1000 competitors travelled from all over GB to compete in the National Stillwater competition in the 50 meter Pool at Millfield School in Somerset.
The little Cornish village of Portreath sent 2 teams of amazing youngsters aged between 7-13 yrs(nippers) and 13-18yrs (youth), who have been training conscientiously throughout the winter for this event.
As you can imagine it was overwhelming for some of our little ones to be faced for the very first time by a 50 meter pool as we don’t have one in Cornwall for them to train in. They proved how big their hearts were after the warm-up by constantly smiling, supporting their team and taking part in every event. There were 25 Nipper Teams in the competition totalling over 700 children and our Portreath Nipper Team came an amazing 7th!
Our Youth Team were one of 23 dedicated teams taking part in this year’s National Stillwater Event – the competition was strong. In true Portreath style the team gave it their all showing skill, sheer strength and pure determination. The racing was phenominal with nail-biting spectating right to the very end!
The results were read in reverse order, Portreath Youth were Crowned National Stillwater Champions 2016 – truly exceptional!!
A HUGE shout out to our Nipper-Juniors who competed in both events over 2 days – your stamina is absolutely unbelievable.
Finally – THANK YOU to our leadership team of loyal managers, coaches, those behind the scenes, helpers and parents who voluntarily give their time to this growing sport to maintain our youngsters fitness, social skills and very importantly they teach sea awareness – so very necessary when growing up in our beautiful Cornish peninsula.
